The Akwa Ibom State Police Command announced the rescue of one baby, Daniel Jackson Ekwere, and two babies, Goodness Effiong Okon and Daniel Jackson Ekwere, aged one month, three weeks, and six months, respectively, who were kidnapped from their parents at gunpoint in the state.
SP Odiko Macdon, the State Police Public Relations Officer, revealed this during the third quarter media briefing held at the Command Headquarters, Ikot Akpanabia in Uyo, noting that at the time of the baby’s rescue, the abductors had concluded a plan to sell the baby for four hundred thousand Naira (N400,000).
The PPRO explained how the incident occurred, saying, “based on a tip-off, the operatives of anti-child theft ambushed and arrested four robbery/child-stealing syndicate namely, Emmanuel Sunday Effiong ‘M’, Ibanga Sunday Effiong ‘M’, Editi Ibanga Effiong ‘f’ and Idorenyin Etim Iron ‘f’ of Ikot Okubo, Ibes
“Investigation revealed that on 8/10/2021 at about 9:00pm, the syndicate used a motorbike, masked their faces, and invaded the house of Mr/Mrs Effiong Okon Udo of Ikot Okubo Ibesikpo Asutan LGA at gunpoint, beating the couple, inflicting them with various degrees of injuries, and abducting their six (6) month-old-baby girl named Goodness Effiong
Ibanga and Emmanuel Effiong Sunday are both ex-convicts for robbery/cultism.
As of the time of the rescue, plans had been made to sell the youngster for four hundred thousand Naira (N400, 000.00).”
According to the PPRO, “the suspect, a forty-year-old Margaret Friday Akpan of Ekpene Ukim Uruan, went to the victim’s mother’s residence, Mrs. Blessing Jackson Ekwere ‘f’ professing to be unwell and afterwards sent the said Blessing Jackson Ekwere to buy medication for her.”
The suspect fled with her one-month-three-week-old baby boy, Daniel Jackson Ekwere, before his mother, Blessing Ekwere, returned from where she had gone to acquire the medications for her.”
He stated that the two infants had been rescued and returned to their parents, and that all accused would be tried in court once the investigations were completed.
Mrs. Effiong Udo, the mother of the six-month-old baby, revealed in an interview that she still feels severe pains on her spinal cord after one of the suspects kicked her in the back to let go of her baby, despite her elation that her child has been reunited with her.
In addition, the mother of the one-month-three-week-old infant revealed that when she called the suspect on the phone to inquire about the location of her baby, the suspect claimed she hadn’t seen her kid and just went to the hospital because her stomach ache became terrible.
“When I phoned her, she denied carrying the baby and said she needed to get to the hospital right away since the pain was excruciating.”
“I promptly called my husband, who called the cops,” Blessing explained.
She stated that when it became clear that the suspect would not be able to hide owing to the calls she received, she placed the baby in a Ghana must go bag and took it to her daughter’s house in Ekpene Ukim, where she was nearly swarmed before the police arrived and arrested her.
Meanwhile, the PPRO stated that during the review period, the command arrested 136 suspects, including 11 murder suspects, 47 armed robbery and stealing suspects, 10 defilement and rape suspects, 21 suspected cultists, 16 suspected vandals, 7 kidnapping suspects, and 24 others, including child theft and other criminal activities.
