Unbeknown to most, there are many surprising and unusual benefits to the act – from keeping your heart healthy to achieving younger skin. To celebrate World S£XUAL Health Day, we’ve rounded up a handful of the best.
S’εx is good for your ticker: Anything that exercises your heart is good for you, and regular 0’rgasms improve cardiovascular health. Sεxμal aroμsal sends the heart rate higher and the number of beats per minute reaches its peak during 0’rgasm – meaning you should aim to have more if you want to cut down on your gym time.
S’εx makes you look younger: Here’s a good reason to stop spending money on expensive face creams: Regular s’εx could now be the key to looking up to seven years younger according to Dr David Weeks, who is the former head of old age psychology at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
According to Dr Weeks, s’εx can make men and women look between five and seven years younger. Of course, this is mainly due to the health benefits attached to s’εx – a healthy person tends to look younger than an unhealthy person – the act of lovemaking also releases a human growth hormone which can help skin to retain elasticity.
S’εx can help you to de-stress: Feeling the strain at work? In recent stress tests, including public speaking and doing mental arithmetic out loud, the people who had no s’εx at all had the highest stress levels whereas people who regularly had s’εx had the smallest rise in blood pressure.
Sex can keep you in shape: According to a study by the University of Quebec at Montreal, a 24-minute s’εx session can burn 104 calories for men and 69 calories for women. That’s around the same (average) amount as walking a mile.
S’εx can combat illness: Want to avoid getting the flu this winter? According to a study carried out in Pennsylvania and published in Psychology Report, people who have s’εx once or twice a week have, on average, 30pc more Immunoglobulin A (IgA), which is used to fight illness, than those who are not sεxμally active.
S’εx can help you sleep better: Forget well-being retreats and sunrise lamps – s’εx could actually be your key to a good night’s sleep. The researchers at the Yale School of Medicine say the production of oxytocin and the decrease in the body’s cortisol leaves your body in a relaxed state, making it easier to drop off.
