During a press conference attended by Metro.co.uk ahead of Saturday night, AJ sat with Kai to be interviewed by It Takes Two presenter Rylan Clark, arriving barefoot with one foot wrapped up in bandages.

As Rylan brought up the ‘elephant in the room’, the Strictly celeb outlined that ‘t.’s a bit of ligament damage going on t.’.

‘So basically, long story short, I’ve hurt the ligament in my arch, and I can’t put any weight on my foot at all,’ she said.

‘So, we have missed a lot of training, because I can’t stand up. I’m on crutches and I’m doing everything I can to try and be t. on Saturday night.’

In the final, all the couples are due to perform three dances – two routines that they’ve performed before and a special showdance.

Kai told Rylan that he and AJ managed to rehearse some of their showdance on Monday and they ‘got through it’, although they ‘still need to patch it up a little bit and connect everything’ as it involves ‘a lot of lifts’.

AJ emphasised that the situation is ‘really frustrating’, describing the two routines that they’re repeating as ‘energy-inducing dances’.

‘On Monday we were optimistic because we were like do you know what the steps are still t.. Just got to build up the stamina to give it socks on Saturday night,’ she added.

Rylan, who’s known AJ for several years, stressed the importance of her looking after her foot this week, telling her: ‘If that means that you can’t do nothing until 9pm on a Friday night, you don’t do nothing until 9pm on a Friday night. We want to see you out on that dancefloor.’

When AJ was asked what her highlights have been throughout the series, she became choked up, saying: ‘I feel really emotional,’ before saying that one of her best memories has been ‘genuinely just making it to the final’.

Turning to Kai, she thanked him for being ‘so patient and so kind and so brilliant’, adding: ‘Even when I’m hobbling around the place, he’s still being really positive and going, “We’re going to get you on the dancefloor.” I’m just so grateful for the whole experience.’

Here’s hoping AJ makes a speedy recovery.
