Anambra State is soon to begin the exportation of rice to improve its economy, says Governor Willie Obiano.

Governor Obiano announced this during the inauguration of Justice Development and Peace Caritas 2016 Week by the Catholic Diocese in Awka on Sunday.

Obiano also revealed that the state’s Ministry of Agriculture had cultivated a special brand of pumpkin and bitter leaf, and called on his people to become self-sufficient by cultivating the fertile land to grow and export vegetables.

Recall that the Anambra State Government had in December last year said it would employ about 5,000 rice workers in its farms located across the state.

Governor Willie Obiano, during a town hall meeting with stakeholders of the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, in Awka South Local Government Area of the state, said that it was in part fulfillment of his campaign promises to create job opportunities for the youths of the state, as well as massive investment in agriculture.

This was in the hope and view that in few months, the state would not only have enough rice for domestic consumption, but would export the product, because there was already a cluster of investors in the state for rice production.

At the inauguration of Justice Development and Peace Caritas 2016, the governor and his wife, Ebelechukwu, were honored as the Grand Pillar and Mother of Charity respectively by the JDPC.

Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese in Akwa, said the award was in recognition of their contributions to improving the lives of the poorest of the poor in the state.

The bishop said national growth demands contributions from every Nigerian, and advised against infringement on human rights by those in authority.

He called on security operatives to always discharge their duties in a patriotic manner, saying that every Nigerian deserved to be treated with respect, not intimidation.

The Director of JDPC in Awka, Rev. Fr. Simon Anigbogu, said the award was well deserved “with special reference to the adequate security instituted by the governor making Anambra the safest state in Nigeria.”

Anigbogu also extolled the governor’s wife for her special programmes for the less privileged and called for collaboration with her foundation for maximum benefit to the poor in the society.
