BIRMINGHAM 2022 : Nigeria Wins Gold In Women’s 4x100m Relay Final, Men Picks Up Bronze Medal – Latest Sports and Football News in Nigeria
Nigeria has won the Commonwealth Games Women’s 4x100m Relay final, finishing ahead of England and Jamaica.
Tobi Amusan, who had defended her Women’s 100m hurdles title at the Games earlier on with a new record of 12.30 seconds time, was drafted in to replace Joy Udo-Gabriel for the final of the Women’s 4x100m race.
She teamed up with the trio of Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Grace Nwokocha to win gold in the event on Sunday with a time of 42.10 seconds, setting a new African record.
Amusan started the historic race before handing over to Ofili, who ensured Nigeria kept the advantage before handing over to Chukwuma, who ran flawlessly and passed the baton over to reigning Nigerian 100m queen, Nwokocha, in first place.
Despite threat from Great Britain’s Darly Neita, Nwokocha maintained Team Nigeria’s advantage to win the nation’s first women’s relay gold at the Games.
Elsew., the men’s team of Udodi Onwuzurike, Favour Ashe, Alaba Akintola, and Raymond Ekevwo also made history by winning bronze. The medal is the first by the men’s 4x100m relay team since 1982.
