Black Designers Brands To Look Out For In 2022



s a Black-owned brand, Black excellence remains a topic that tickles our fancy. When we see Black designers and brands marry preparation with opportunity, that’s a sign for greater things to come. This year could easily be themed as the re-emergence of fashion, as many events reverted to physical meetups, and every fashion designer serious about the game turned the creative volume all the way up.

Based on performance and response this year, we’ve spotlighted a few Black designers to look out for in 2022. They went over and beyond to create elegant pieces that reverberated with the majority, and it’s almost predictable that success in the coming year would be a natural byproduct.


Check out 10 Black designers to look out for in 2022 in no particular order….

#1. Savage x Fenty

Business tycoon Rihanna keeps trying her hands on different entrepreneurial projects and blowing it up into an empire, think of it as the Midas touch. In addition to her cosmetics line Fenty, Rihanna launched her lingerie line, and it’s been an absolute success. We might not know what next is up the star’s sleeves, but we do know that as long as Savage x Fenty continues to infuse inclusivity into every creation, t.’s no room for downhill.

#2. Sai Sanko

This designer hails from Sierra Leone and is well known for her resort themed Kaftans, also known as “Rich Aunty” fashion. Her designs have a perfect mix of vintage and contemporary fashion, and have been spotted on celebrities like Porsha Williams.

#3. Kerby Jean-Raymond

Season after season, it’s undeniable that most front row guests anticipate the new direction Pyer Moss would showcase on the runways. Jean-Raymond is one of those Black designers we need to keep the fashion energy filled with innovative surprises. His knack for tying each collection to a societal need, from mental health to political issues, is applaudable and creative.

#4. Laquan Smith

The year 2021 was a good year for designer Laquan Smith, with many celebrities flaunting their red carpet Laquan Smith ensembles. From celebrities like Ciara stunning in every piece to countless awards and magazine features. Laquan Smith is one of the talented Black designers to look out for in 2022.

#5. Hanifa

This year, t. was almost no celebrity who didn’t rock a Hanifa piece (maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point). From African artiste Tiwa Savage to Hollywood sweetheart Gabrielle Union, Anifa Mvuemba must be proud of her brand’s success. It’s almost surprising that she debuted her first live runway show for her Fall 2021 collection “Dream.” It’s super exciting to see iconic celebrities rock her pieces after years of putting in the work.

#6. Christopher John Rogers

The goodies of the year came in early for Rogers, after he created the highly talked about purple inauguration coat on Vice President Kamala Harris. Rogers won the “American Womenswear Designer of the Year” award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), and obviously, his elegant pieces speak for themselves.

#7. Aurora James

James is the founder of fashion brand Brother Vellies and creator of 15 Percent Pledge. The latter was formed to urge retailers to commit at least 15 percent of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses. The response has been buzz-worthy, especially in this time when the fight for racial equality stays burning. As a brand that keeps giving back to its roots and paving the way for other Black designers, next year only promises to keep James in the spotlight.

#8. Jason Rembert

New York-based celebrity stylist Jason Rembert has been the hand behind the red carpet and magazine cover looks of lots of celebrities over the years. This year, his luxury fashion brand, Aliétte, blew up after Zendaya was spotted in one of his beguiling pieces for her Netflix film, Malcolm & Marie.

#9. Fe Noel

Most times big things start small, and that was the case for Fe Noel, which started as a small project in Brooklyn and can currently be named an internationally recognized brand. Influential women like Beyonce and Michelle Obama’s silhouettes have been graced with Noel’s artsy and flowy pieces. Some persons credit the brand’s energy to Noel’s New York and Grenadian background, we credit it to her tenacity and creativity.

#10. Andrea Iyamah

This was initially a Nigerian bikini line that eventually broadened to encompass a ready-to-wear line that caters to the average girl next door as well as celebrities like Gabrielle Union. The thing that stands out for the brand is its ethnic and nature theme. It’s been a good year for Dumebi Iyamah, and she’s sure one of the Black designers to look out for in 2022.
