According to reliable sources, Troops of the Nigerian Army were attacked by purported Boko Haram members from the ISWAP group yesterday on their way to Maiduguri.
Terrorists fired rocket launchers at military trucks between Marte and Dikwa council areas, resulting in sporadic shootings and the fatalities of servicemen being carried from Marte Local Government Area to Maiduguri, according to sources.
Marte, 180 kilometers north of Maiduguri, has remained one of Borno’s council areas not wholly held by people, with the majority of its residents fleeing to Monguno and other parts of Maiduguri’s surrounds for protection.
Initially, a reliable source told reporters that 16 soldiers were killed in the ambush, but later this evening, another source told reporters that “about 30 soldiers were killed, with others sustaining gunshot injuries.”
“What happened to the military in the Marte-Dikwa axis was disastrous, demonstrating that eliminating terrorists is an impossibility. Troops who had served for a long period and wished to see their family or loved ones were given passes.
“Unfortunately, they were ambushed by suspected armed ISWAP while going from Marte to Maiduguri, who fired Rocket Launchers at the trucks conveying them, killing about 30 soldiers and left others missing in action.” This is according to a trustworthy source.
All attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer for confirmation had failed as of press time, and the military spokesman’s department had yet to issue a statement on the incident.
