In this week’s issue of ES magazine, Burna Boy discusses his Grammy win, the 02 arena tour in London, his role in the End Sars movement, and how he feels about his music.
Despite being born and raised in Lagos, the interviewer writes about Burna Boy, saying, “London is a second home for Burna Boy, who relocated to the UK after school to study media technology at the University of Sussex.”
“There’s something about the vibe there that reminds me of my birthplace,” says Burna Boy of his passion for London.
I have quite strong roots here [in London], friends who have become family, and, most significantly, my creative juices are always flowing here.”
He had some reservations about his O2 Arena performance. “That night [at the O2], the setlist only included about half of the songs I planned to perform.” They were attempting to cut me off around 10 p.m. “Believe me, I’m prepared to go for three hours.”
He discussed his Grammy Award-winning album, Twice As Tall, which was recorded during the lockdown and will be published in August 2020. P Diddy served as executive producer.
When he met P Diddy, the atmosphere was electric: “We were funny, loud, thrilled, and flinging bangs back and forth, the atmosphere was crazy!” “This shit is deeper than rap, this is a true brotherhood, the two kings reuniting!” Diddy exclaimed.
He believes that people assume he became more egoistic after winning the Grammy. “People assume it’s altered me in some way, and I say the only thing that’s changed is that now everyone sees what’s been going on; I’ve always been this person.”
He is hesitant to repeat what he said in May. “I have to think for an entire generation,” he remarked.
In terms of my message and what I stand for, I may need to rest with the fire for the time being.
“It’s quite exhausting, man. I feel like I need something to prove to myself. But I’m at a stage right now where I don’t feel like I do.”
He concludes the interview by fantasizing about a silent getaway away from the noise to replenish his spirit.
