Calvin Bassey was sent off just 17 minutes into his Ajax debut against PSV in the customary Dutch league season curtain-opener at the Johan Cruyff ArenA in Amsterdam on Saturday evening.

Bassey was introduced in the 62nd minute in place of Owen Wijndal with scores level at 2-2, but preceding actions turned out a debut the Nigerian international will be in a hurry to forget as PSV netted two goals in seven minutes to lead 2-4 .
Ten minutes after Bassey’s introduction, Ghanaian forward Mohammed Kudus pulled one back for Ajax in the 72nd-minute to reduce the deficit to 3-4 .
However, in the 78th minute, Bassey was adjudged to have lunged a clumsy tackle on Moroccan midfielder Ismael Saibari after VAR was used to review his challenge.
The former Rangers left back was initially showed a yellow card, but after a review it was upgraded to a red card. An incident that meant that Bassey only saw action for 17 minutes after coming on a second half sub.

Indeed, it was a nightmare debut for the Nigerian international, who joined Ajax from Glasgow Rangers of Scotland less than a month ago and only secured a late work permit to be eligible for the game.
Interestingly, the hat-trick from Guus Til alongside contributions from Cody Gakpo and new kid on the block from Paris Saint-Germain Xavi Simons was all PSV needed to secure their 13th Super Cup, claiming the Johann Cruyff shield with a 5-3 win over Ajax.
