A court in Edo State has sentenced an impersonator and ten other individuals involved in fraudulent activities. Justice Efe Ikponmwonba of the Edo State High Court in Benin City handed down the sentences on Tuesday.
The ten other individuals convicted are Ariomoghwa Lucky, Ogbebor Pricewill, Irikefe Prosper, Odiri Ejiro, Eyengho Richard, Apoi Ufouma, Enabor Peter Odianosen, Sylvester Osatofoh Ebhoaiye, Edafe Promise, and Christian Skinn. They faced separate arraignments on one-count charges of personation and unlawful possession of fraudulent documents by the Benin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Upon arraignment, the defendants pleaded guilty to their respective charges, leading the prosecution counsels to request convictions and appropriate sentencing. The defense counsel asked for leniency, noting the defendants’ remorse for their actions.
Justice Ikponmwonba convicted and sentenced Agbi to one year of imprisonment or a fine of N100,000. Ebhoaiye, Skinn, Lucky, Richard, and Ufuoma received three years of imprisonment with an option of a N300,000 fine. Princewill and Ejiro were sentenced to three years of imprisonment or a fine of N500,000 each, while Promise and Prosper received three years of imprisonment or a fine of N200,000 each. Odianosen was also sentenced to three years of imprisonment or an option of a N500,000 fine.
The judge ordered the forfeiture of two Toyota Venza, one Mercedes Benz GLK, one Lexus NX200, and a Honda Accord 2013 model, along with mobile phones and balances in the convicts’ bank accounts. These assets were deemed proceeds of the crime and were to be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
