Residents of Sokponba Road in Benin City, Edo State’s capital, have been mourning the deaths of nine people in an early morning car accident.
According to a witness to the tragedy, it happened at Ogbelaka Junction when a tipper loaded with sand collided with two buses that were transporting passengers.
According to the sources, the number of fatalities would have been higher if the Bureau De Change operators at Erie Junction had not fled for their lives when automobiles attempting to flee the situation attempted to crush them.
The tipper involved in the tragedy was attempting to overtake another tipper when he lost control and smashed with the two minibuses, killing numerous commuters on the spot, according to eyewitnesses.
The accident resulted in a traffic gridlock because the exit routes to Asoro Street, Eri, and Ogbelaka were entirely shut, forcing commuters to walk lengthy distances to reach their destinations.
While witnesses reported seeing at least nine bodies at the scene, Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer Bello Kontongs confirmed only four individuals perished in the accident when contacted.
