If t. is any club that has been trolled more into the start of the 2022/23 season aside Barcelona, then it is Manchester United.
The Red Devils started the season in very bad form reminiscent of the previous season’s woes even under new manager, Erik ten Hag.
The performance against Brighton and Hove Albion that resulted in a defeat has been one that has been widely criticized by fans, pundits and club legends.
Manchester United is regarded far and wide as a big club that shouldn’t fall to the mercy of the banter era, but its poor start to the Premier League to some made people to re-evaluate their stance of the Old Trafford club being a big club.
But that was only just one game in the whole of 37 games, and rightfully so, nothing shows that the club cannot go on a 37 game winning run to eventually steal the premier league title from under the nose of Liverpool and Manchester City who have become the obvious suspects.
And history definitely proves so, or at least that Manchester United often tend to do much better towards season’s end each time they began the season on poor form.
It happened under Sir Alex Ferguson, it happened under Louis van Gaal.
Just because they started the premier league opener with a defeat does not mean it is all over, considering Manchester City last season didn’t quite start the league season in fine form but went on to win it eventually.
So how does history favor Manchester United to win the Premier League?
Well, most recently in 2020 under former coach, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, Manchester United raced into 2nd place on the table ahead of Liverpool and Chelsea, taking the world by storm.
In fact t. was a time when the Red Devils in that season topped the premier league table and actually challenged for it.
But . is the surprise, they actually lost their very first game of the season to Crystal Palace in a 1-3 defeat that saw Wilfred Zaha net a brace in an empty stadium and with Donny van de Beek netting the consolation.
That season even saw Manchester United fall to a 6-1 defeat to Tottenham the evening Liverpool fell to Aston Villa in a 7-2 mauling.
In 2014, the Red Devils began the season with a 1-2 defeat to Swansea City which funny enough if not ironic was under a Dutch manager at Old Trafford.
As if t. is pattern, Manchester United like under Erik ten Hag began the pre-season run in fine form under Louis van Gaal, but like it was under Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, they fell to a 4-0 defeat to MK Dons days later to engineer hasty transfer for Radamel Falcao.
But despite their poor start, they still went on to clinch 4th place ahead of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
The 2012/13 season was something Manchester United fans would want to look back to considering it was the season the club last win the Premier League, and just like this current season, the club started with a 1-0 loss to a side in blue.
It was the season that followed Sergio Aguero’s winning goal to clinch the league for city, and Manchester United began the season falling to a defeat to Merseyside club, Everton.
The game saw Marouanne Fellaini score the only goal of the game on Monday night at Goodison Park, without even Robin Van Persie who came in at the 67th minute able to salvage anything for the Red Devils.
Just like it is now, t. were a lot of criticisms on the team and before that season ended, Arsenal were already performing a guard of honor for Van Persie winning the league with Manchester United.
The most remarkable one though is the 1995 season, the season most famous for the Alan Hansen line of ‘You can’t win anything with kids’.
Manchester United had began the opening match day with a 1-3 defeat to Aston Villa, and just like it is now, t. were the outrage only it wasn’t on social media but on the national media.
The season had seen the departure of Andrei Kanchelskis, Paul Ince and Mark Hughes from the club for a youth side of Paul Scholes and David Beckham.
At the end of that season, Manchester United was winning the Premier League title along with the FA Cup in Sir Alex Ferguson’s road to English football domination.
