Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, a three-term member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, has voiced optimism that a female President may be elected in 2023 if women were given the opportunity.
According to her, a woman might make history by succeeding President Buhari in 2023 if given the power and platform to be tested in elections.
Onyejocha, who represents Abia State’s Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal district, revealed these in an interview with journalists on the sidelines of a conference titled “Paving the Path: Forum for Women’s Participation in Political Leadership in Nigeria Past, Present, and Future” in Abuja.
The House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs, in collaboration with ActionAid Nigeria, the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, and Elect her, hosted the event.
“We are here today because Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has provided us with a platform to advocate for this bill, which he is also co-sponsoring.
“You understand what it means for a Speaker, the country’s number four citizen, to say that gender is at the heart of his administration.
That is one of the cardinal points on which he would prioritize various things, including all of his work with youths, the underprivileged, and the handicapped.”
“On when Nigeria will be ripe for a female presidency, it is possible in 2023,” Onyejeocha stated.
“What’s to stop you? Because all of the persons who have become President have been backed by the public. That’s it if the gamers and kingmakers determine that a woman should be the next President.”
“However, I am not engrossed in that” (Presidency).
I am a legislator; I do not aspire to be President; nevertheless, there are those who do, and I am rooting for them.
