Jeremy Clarkson has claimed he didn’t know who Paddy McGuinness was when he joined Top Gear as his replacement – and it’s awkward.

He made the dig after McGuinness said the show now has better ratings than it did when Clarkson presented it.

And that jibe came after Clarkson made a dig at A Question of Sport, which McGuinness also hosts.

‘What on Earth has happened to A Question of Sport?’ Clarkson tweeted, to which McGuinness replied: ‘The same thing that’s happened to Top Gear, JC. New personnel, bigger ratings. Love you,’ wish a kissing emoji.

Clarkson continued their beef by telling The Sun: ‘I didn’t know who the man hosting Question of Sport was. I thought, “What the f*** am I watching? What is this programme?”‘

He continued: ‘A large number of people who I didn’t know were all shouting, “What has happened to Question of Sport?” And then it turned out the man in the middle of it all does Top Gear.’

The former Take Me Out host was announced as part of the Top Gear family in 2018, joining the 27th series.

Clarkson was dismissed from hosting Top Gear in 2015 after accusations of verbal and physical abuse.

Clarkson went on to say McGuinness ‘seems a nice enough chap,’ but said A Question of Sport is now ‘a long way from Bill Beaumont’ – who was a regular contestant on the BBC quiz show and became the show’s second longest-serving captain (14 years in total).

The original series of A Question of Sport was hosted by Sue Barker for 24 years, but McGuinness took over this year alongside captains Ugo Monye and Sam Quek – the first female captain on the show.

When he’s not making sarcastic digs on Twitter, however, McGuinness recently shared an insight into his home life.

The proud northerner shares three kids with his wife Christine McGuinness and previously opened up about their autism diagnosis in a recent documentary.

Taking to Instagram, he gave fans a glimpse into their trip to a local cafe, complete with chips and cake, explaining that their day out was something he ‘never thought’ they would be able to do.

He wrote: ‘This made me so happy! It probably doesn’t seem like much, a few chips and some cake with the kids but this is something I never thought we’d get to experience as a family.

‘Going out for something to eat would either end in a meltdown, food not being touched or most of the time we wouldn’t even make it to a table!’

‘Yesterday we went to a small cafe and sat together as a family. The kids got stuck into chips, cake, pop and sat happily for an hour…that was when the cake ran out,’ he continued.

‘I’m posting this to let other families like ours know (especially the Dad’s) that it can and will happen for you too.’

Ending on an uplifting note, he reminded other parents that ‘it will happen,’ ‘matter how long it takes, no matter how many weekends end in tears, no matter how desperate and unhappy you feel.’

Top Gear airs at 8pm on Sundays on BBC One.
