Jolidee Matongo, Johannesburg’s newly-elected mayor, was killed in a car accident.
According to his office, the catastrophe killed Johannesburg’s mayor as he went home from campaigning with South Africa’s president on Saturday, barely over a month after being elected.
Matongo, 46, was returning from a voter registration drive in Soweto township before of local elections when the tragedy occurred.
“It is difficult to fathom this tragedy, given the vigor and zest with which Mayor Matongo spoke with me and the inhabitants of Soweto so briefly before his death,” President Cyril Ramaphosa tweeted.
“Nothing could have prepared any of us for this unforeseen loss, which has left the economic heartland of our country without an Executive Mayor for the second time in two months.”
Matongo was chosen on August 10 after his predecessor passed away in July from Covid-19 complications.
The news left Gauteng Premier David Makhura, who was also at the voter registration drive in Soweto, “shocked and shattered.”
