Strictly Come Dancing star Kai Widdrington has shared his highlights of the series ahead of the 2021 final, saying that he ‘bawled’ after he and AJ Odudu performed their stunning Quickstep on Saturday night.

In the semi-final of the competition, Kai and AJ achieved their very first perfect score for their old school Hollywood-esque routine, before also wowing with a raunchy Rumba on the dancefloor.

The pair are currently facing a huge obstacle in their preparations for the final, with TV presenter AJ confirming the devastating news that she has sustained a severe foot injury that requires her to walk with crutches.

During a press conference attended by Metro.co.uk and other press, the duo expressed their hope that they’ll be able to compete on Saturday night, while also looking back on their fondest memories on the show.

Kai revealed that his highlights are a mix of week one and the Quickstep in the semi-final, explaining that the latter performance was ‘the best we’ve ever felt or I’ve ever felt dancing with you on the dancefloor’.

‘I remember coming off after we did Claudia’s bit . and got the scores. I remember just walking around the back t. and absolutely bawling my eyes out for no reason other than I was just like, “Oh my gosh, you’re so amazing”,’ he said, recalling the short chat they shared with presenter Claudia Winkleman as they found out their score.

Their incredible performance was especially meaningful given they had landed in the bottom two the previous week, after a lift blunder during their Salsa that left them sorely disappointed.

‘The fact that she’d come back from a dance-off last week, you know, we were back against the ropes we could have… if we’d done the lift wrong we might have been out in the quarter final,’ the professional dancer continued.

‘So the fact that we came back, did a Quickstep of that level… just the grit and determination really moved me and I don’t cry ever, like I’m very, very not in touch with that side, but when it all hit us and we got the 40 as well.’

Nonetheless, Kai added that if anyone were to mention any weekend, they would point out all of the ‘iconic moments’ that they’ve shared.

He paid homage to his celebrity partner, emphasising the strength in character that she demonstrated when they were knocked down.

‘For me, that was a moment w. AJ’s shown what type of person she really is, which is strong,’ he stated.

‘She’s got character, she just shows what a bit of grit and determination can do and that should mean a lot to a lot of people because it shows when you’re back against the ropes, you can still push through and do something.’

The Strictly Come Dancing final airs on Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
