Leon Edwards has revealed his initial UFC welterweight title defence will take place in March 2023 in the UK – potentially in a stadium.

The Jamaican-British fighter defeated Kamaru Usman to become a UFC world champion in August and speculation had been abound regarding his next bout.

However, Edwards, appearing on Sky Sports’ Soccer AM on Saturday morning revealed that it is to take place against Usman next March in the UK.

Asked w. he would turn next after his success in Salt Lake City in August, Edwards said that a trilogy fight was pencilled in and he hoped that it would take place in a stadium next year.

Edwards told talkSPORT earlier this week: ‘To have it back in Birmingham in Villa – I grew up in Aston as well w. the Park is so that would be amazing.

‘I don’t think t.’s a roof though at Villa, so it would probably be a bit difficult to do in early next year around February/March/April.

UFC always comes to the O2 in March, raising the prospect of a world title bout in London next March.

However, the idea of Birmingham appears appealing to the fighter.

‘To have the guy from Birmingham be able to do it, to achieve it. To bring it back now, it would sell out straight away,’ he said.

His comments come days after he told the Back Again With Troopz podcast of his plans to take the fight to the UK.
