Just like a woman frets about her facial skin or the size of her boobs, she should also be concerned about her vaginal health. A healthy vagina breeds good bacteria and is capable of fending off infections on its own. It doesn’t smell and secretes small amount of white clear discharge to regularly cleanse your insides. But is your vagina healthy? . are some tips to go about it.
Do not use strong soaps or disinfectants to clean your privates. “The harsh elements of the soaps or cleansers eliminate good bacteria that breed in your private parts and leave you exposed to infections. Also, it can interfere with the pH levels of the area. Thereby, it is best to use a pH-based lotion so that the good bacteria remain intact and prevents any sort of yeast infection,” suggests Dr Meenakshi Ahuja, director, Obs and Gynae, Fortis La Femme.
Keep the area dry. The private parts should not only stay clean but also dry. “After every wash or loo visit, make sure you pat dry the area with a tissue or cloth/towel,” adds Dr Ahuja. Dampness in your private parts will make way for infections. Also, change out of swimwear as soon as possible.
Wear not too fitting cotton underpants. Most clothes don’t allow air circulation, thus, making it an ideal ground for infections to build. Make sure that at least the gusset is 100% cotton. Also, during bedtime, slip in your loose pyjamas and allow the area to breathe.
Wipe from front to back. After every washroom visit, you should wipe from front to back to avoid bacterial contamination.
Change sanitary napkins regularly. During periods, make sure that you change your sanitary napkins or tampons regularly. Moreover, do not use panty liners to absorb regular discharge if you are not having your period.
Drink lots and lots of water. The more fluid you have, the better your body will be able to flush out toxins, recommends Dr Yuvakshi Juneja, Obs & Gynae, Moolchand Women’s Hospital.
Eat well. Your diet plays an important part in ensuring your reproductive health. Cranberry juice, barley water and yogurt can not only avoid yeast infections but also help in the treatment too.
