Two Lekki lawyers have said they would move fast to free protesters who were taken into arrested by the police on Saturday morning.

Naijaloaded earlier reported that at least 13 protesters were arrested after they showed up early for Saturday’s protest against the reopening of the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos.

The toll gate was the scene of a deadly shooting by Nigerian soldiers at those protesting police brutality on Oct. 20, 2020.

On Feb. 6, a judicial panel looking into cases of police brutality following the #EndSARS protests agreed to reopen the toll gate – in a controversial 5-4 decision that immediately caused dissension among members.

Nigerians, however, protested the panel’s decision, saying it was insensitive to reopen the toll plaza before victims of the massacre and other unresolved police violence have received justice.

The arrests by the police task force team immediately drew criticism from Nigerians who followed the development on social media.

“We condemn in its entirety the conduct of the Rapid Response Squad and Lagos State Special Taskforce of the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Police Force,” said lawyers Oladotun Hassan and Ayo Ademiluyi in a statement, accusing the police of “foisting an atmosp. of intimidation on the ordinary citizens of our jurisdiction.”

The lawyers said they had commenced efforts to free the protesters and ensure that their fundamental rights were not violated.
