Diogo Jota slots in a new deal with Liverpool ahead of the coming season with the club.
Great news for the Liverpool community as the club’s forward, Diogo Jota signs in new contract worth long time commitment with the club.
The Portugal international came on the back of a 2020/21 season from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2020.
It was a season that had so many negatives for the club in a few ways with Diogo Jota establishing himself as one of the positives as he helped the club to an eventual 3rd place finish in the league and a Quarter final finish in the Champions League.
Jota the Slotter as he is called by some Liverpool fans due to his finishing prowess, put pen to paper earlier today on Tuesday at the AXA Training Centre on a new 5 year deal that is set to expire in 2027.
The former Wolves and Atletico Madrid .er like Luis Diaz seamlessly adapted into Jurgen Klopp’s system, scoring in his first Premier League appearance for the Reds against Arsenal at Anfield.
Since then, the Liverpool number 20 has had his most goals against the North London club, scoring in all of his appearances against the Gunners, making it something of a tradition.
Though his first season was marred by a lengthy injury lay off, he went on to score a dozen goals, including a hat-trick away at Atalanta BC in the Champions League, a season that was ill fated for Liverpool in the Premier League.
The 2021-2022 season was slightly better as he scored a considerable 21 goal in all competition to guide the Reds to its Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup, scoring against Leicester City in their 3-0 comeback and against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi final.
On the new contract, the forward said:
“Well, [I’m] really proud, I have to say,” he told Liverpoolfc.com after signing his new contract.
“Obviously since I arrived two years ago I established myself as an important .er in this team that’s what I wanted from the beginning.
“Now, signing a new long-term deal, it’s obviously from the club’s perspective proof of the belief in myself as a .er. For me, obviously it’s really good to establish I’ll be . for a while.
“So, the beginning of a new season, let’s do it.”
Unfortunately, the forward has to battle an injury lay off that has kept him out of the team since the pre-season games, but he was on hand at the Kings Power Stadium at Leicester City in the weekend to pick up his medal for the Community Shield triumph over Manchester City.
“Unfortunately for me I had an upset in this pre-season because I got injured [in the] last game of the season .ing with Portugal,” he added. “So I was coming back in this pre-season, I felt it a little bit again. So it will be a few more weeks, I would say.
“When you fight for everything, like we did last year, you just want to do it again and to do it better, because it’s possible.
“That drive is in me and I know it’s in my teammates and all the staff. We have everything to fight for those titles out t..”
Klopp on the contract extension said:
“He scores goals – not a bad quality – he works unbelievably hard for the team, his pressing and counter-pressing are on an unbelievable level, he can . in all of our attacking roles and he has an incredible attitude.”
