Oyo lawmakers Urges Gov. Makinde To Start Implementing The Anti-open Grazing Law

Members of the Oyo State House of Assembly have urged Governor Seyi Makinde to put the anti-open grazing law into effect as soon as possible.

The anti-open grazing bill was passed by the Assembly in October 2019,

The law prohibits livestock grazing in public, on streets, or within municipalities throughout the state.

According to our source, the law has not been applied since it was passed two years ago.

The law was passed as a result of a bill sponsored by several Assembly members.

The measure was introduced by the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Abiodun Fadeyi, and other assembly major officers.

State politicians, on the other hand, have urged the executive branch of government to ensure that the legislation is followed.

During their plenary on Thursday, the MPs also raised concern over the possibility of an increase in herders/farmers clashes in the state’s rural communities.

They stated that as the dry season approaches, there is a risk of farmers/herders clashes.

The MPs then urged the executive branch to put steps in place to execute the Anti-Open Grazing Prohibition Law.

This was the legislators’ resolution while contributing to a motion on the necessity to put measures in place to prevent herdsmen/farmers confrontations in the state.

Hon Francis Adetunji (Oluyole) and Hon Saminu Gbadamosi (Atisbo/Saki East) introduced the motion together in the Assembly.

“As the dry season approaches, herders and their cattle from the rapidly drying North will be moving down to the West to find fresher pastures for their animals,” the MPs added.

“The risk is that herders will not limit their cattle’s grazing to uncultivated farmland alone.”
Past experiences would remind us of the harsh stories our farmers had to tell.

“Many of our farmers have fled their farms because they are afraid of being killed by notorious herders, or because they have suffered significant losses as a result of the wanton destruction of their crops by this group of individuals and their animals.”

In his remarks, Assembly Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin stated that the continuing destruction of farmlands by Fulani herders and their animals was intolerable.

Ogundoyin, who presided over the session, insisted that security services work together to address the issue of farmers/herders.

“Our security agents, Amotekun Corps, and other vigilance groups must work together to handle this threat and apprehend these agents of destruction,” he stated.

“We cannot afford a rise in Fulani herders’ activities on our land.”
