Three alleged members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), including the group’s commander, were killed in a firefight yesterday in Amaifeke, Orlu LGA, Imo state, according to the police.
This was said by Rabiu Hussaini, the state’s police commissioner, in a statement released today by Michael Abattam, the state’s police spokeswoman.
According to Hussaini, cops were dispatched to the IPOB members’ camp in response to intelligence reports that the group was plotting attacks on police stations and government infrastructure.
The statement reads, “On 11/9/2021 at about 1230 hours, the command’s tactical teams immediately mobilized and stormed the terror group’s hideout located in an unfinished building in a valley at Essential Home popularly known as “Ngbuka” in Amaifeke Orlu LGA of Imo State,” according to the statement.
“When the terror group’s members saw police operatives in their hideout, they opened fire. The valiant and battle-ready tactical squads retaliated quickly.
“Three hoodlums were killed in the gunfight: Chidera Nnabuhe, the Orlu Sector Commander of IPOB/ ESN a.k.a. “Dragon,” a native of Umuala Amaifeke in Orlu LGA, and two others — a.k.a. J.J and Dadawa, both residents of Ohazara in Ebonyi state.
“Emeka Sunday ‘M’, 20, of Anike, Ohazara LGA, Ebonyi State, and Anthony Okeke ‘M’, 44, of Umuala Amaifeke Orlu LGA, Imo, were apprehended, while others fled into the forest with bullet wounds.
“A native goat that had just been murdered with the blood poured into a bottle and rubbed over their bodies to protect themselves against police bullets was recovered during a search of the camp and its surroundings.”
Two general purpose machine guns (GPMGs), 16 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), one pump-action gun, two locally-made handguns, 37 rounds of live ammunition, and three automatic machine gun kickstarters, according to the police commissioner, were discovered.
Other items include a bomb detonator, three automatic guns with connecting batteries, gun powder, charms, two Biafran flags, three bomb detonator remote controls, GSM handsets, and “one black travelling bag containing male clothes suspected of being robbed or belonging to a kidnapped victim with GSM NUMBER 08034958267 pasted on it,” he said.
The group started fire when they saw the police, according to the police commissioner, but the “gallant and battle ready tactical units promptly returned the fire, killing three of them in the process and arresting two.”
