Prof Abayomi Fasina, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, mentioned that some senior figures in academia are working to bring together two groups: the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA).
Fasina believes those happy about the division in the academic community will soon be disappointed as unity is on the horizon.
During a leadership retreat for newly elected student union leaders at FUOYE’s Division of Students’ Affairs in Ede, Fasina stressed that ASUU should learn from the conflicts leading to CONUA’s formation and opt for diplomacy over confrontation.
Additionally, Fasina praised President Bola Tinubu for ordering the removal of federal tertiary institutions from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).
This move brings relief to ASUU, which had opposed IPPIS, considering it an obstacle to the autonomy of academic institutions in the country.
