The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, confirmed the tragic passing of Chisom Nwankwo, a 500-level student of Agric/Economics.

According to Abiodun Olanrewaju, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, the incident occurred in a collision involving two motorcycles and two vehicles along Road 1 on Tuesday morning.

Olanrewaju explained,

“An okada rider attempted to overtake a red Toyota Corolla, resulting in the bike being hit by the car’s side mirror. The rider and passenger fell, with the passenger identified as Deborah Okunola, a Part 2 student of psychology at our school.”

“Subsequently, Chika Nwakore was transporting Chisom Nwankwo, a Part 5 female student of the Department of Agric Economics, who arrived at the scene. However, due to the distraction caused by the initial accident, the motorcyclist lost concentration, and a bus approaching from behind collided with the bike.”

“Both Chisom and the okada rider sustained injuries and were initially taken to our health center but later transferred to the OAU Teaching Hospital. Sadly, Chisom was later declared deceased.”

“The university has informed the authorities and initiated necessary actions. The vice-chancellor and management express deep concern over the incident and highlight the need for road safety. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased during this difficult time.”
