Senate President Ahmad Lawan has urged Nigerians who are sceptical about the Electoral Act Amendment Bill before by the National Assembly, to exercise some restraint.
Lawan cautioned the people against attacking the presiding officers who are just the mouthpiece of the election board. He disclosed that the presiding officers were not responsible for the amendments being proposed in the Electoral Act.
He said: “The National Assembly is embarking on the amendment of the Electoral Act. Probably by next week or within the next two weeks.
“It’s very important that those who feel very strongly about any amendment that they think should be effected in the electoral act should contact or talk to their members of House of Representatives as well as Distinguished Senators.
“I want to state categorically clear . that presiding officers are not the ones to determine what is coming or what is not.”
In other news, Ahmad Lawan recently explained that Nigerians were deceived into thinking that the N9.2 billion budgeted for the rehabilitation of the National Assembly complex had been mismanaged by the federal lawmakers.
According to Lawan, the N9.2 billion had been domiciled in the Federal Capital Territory budget and it was still going through the procurement process. Lawan spoke at the Conference of Presiding Officers of the Nigerian Legislature in Abuja titled: “Public perception of the role of Legislature: Post Legislative Scrutiny and Independence of the Legislature.”
Lawan said: “But you know what, when t. was leakage, some of these critics and haters and traducers of the National Assembly said the National Assembly had spent the money. They have finished the rehabilitation. Look at what is happening. They didn’t even care to find out what really happened. So, they went to town.
