On Saturday, September 11, 2021, a building belonging to the Holy Ghost Church in Abeda Pave Community, Chachanji Ward in Takum Local Council in Taraba state fell during a church service, killing at least two people.
According to reports, the structure collapsed after a strong downpour that lasted several hours, submerging the local government council in floodwaters and stranding travelers for several hours.
The two victims were male and female, and several other members of the congregation were injured to varied degrees.
Several worshippers were believed to have left the scene with critical injuries, in addition to the two people confirmed to have perished as a result of the disaster.
The council chairman, Shiban Tikari, confirmed the report, saying that while he was aware of the occurrence, he had not yet visited the location. He did confirm, however, that two people died in the accident.
Mathew Adega, a former Chachanji ward Supervisory Councilor who also confirmed the incidence to our correspondent, stated the two victims are male and female.
Adega, who was unable to determine the exact number of people injured at the time of the incident’s confirmation, concurred that several church members were injured in one way or another.
Some residents told our correspondent that the church building collapsed unexpectedly as it was raining cats and dogs in the neighborhood.
