The question – what causes dandruff? should be one of the most commonly asked beauty questions ever. In fact, we would bet our face mask that it is. But irrespective of how pressing this question is, there are tons of myths out there.
Believe us when we say we’ve heard all sorts – like using urine as a cure and how having dandruff automatically means your hair is dirty. There are so many misconceptions that could lead you down the wrong path. But not to worry – team Fashion Style Beauty is on the case.
First off, let’s clear the air on what dandruff really is. Basically, dandruff is what occurs when the skin cells on your scalp divide too fast. Usually, when skin cells divide, they shed off the skin at the same rate. But when they divide quicker than they shed, there is a build up on the scalp which leads to flaking. These flakes are what we see and refer to as dandruff.

Dandruff is ONLY caused by a dry scalp
This is perhaps one of the most common misconceptions out there. A dry scalp isn’t the only cause of dandruff. Equally, having excess oil on your scalp could also cause dandruff. Our skin has a natural yeast called Malassezia Furfur which thrives when there is lots of oil on the scalp. Some people are sensitive to it and this could cause a . that would lead to skin cells generating faster. This eventually leads to a build up and eventually, flaking.
An oil treatment is the only way to cure dandruff
Put that bottle of oil down! Leading from the point above, dandruff comes from oil and adding more oil would not make it any better. It may appear to be working, but chances are you’ll end up with softer, greasier and thicker dandruff.
You should always scratch away flakes before you shampoo or condition hair
We remember getting this done at a young age. We didn’t know much then, but we do now. Scratching the flakes away isn’t always the best idea. Doing this could lead to damaging the scalp and cause infections and other problems.
