‘After all these years, to be going back to w. it all started. Back to the Matrix.’

Jonathan Groff’s character ushers in these lines in the official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, and it’s surely an exciting sentiment that many a fan will be feeling too – back to the Matrix 22 years after the very first movie premiered in 1999.

From the trailer alone, fans will spot that t.’s plenty of familiar faces returning – most notably Keanu Reeves is back as Neo – but t. are also plenty of new characters.

Keanu Reeves is back as Neo, the prophesised ‘One’ from the original trilogy.

In Resurrections, Neo is said to have been repaired by the Machines and reinserted into a new version of the Matrix, with his memories suppressed in order to keep him under control.

Trinity is a computer programmer and a hacker who has escaped from the Matrix – and a love interest of Neo.

Carrie-Anne Moss is returning to the role, having .ed Trinity throughout the original trilogy.

Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe

Niobe is a human General and former Captain of the hovercraft Logos.

Pinkett Smith reprises the role from the Matrix Reloaded and the Matrix Revolutions.

Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian

A trafficker of information who encountered Neo prior to the end of the Machine War in the original trilogy, the Merovingian has a long-standing grudge against the Oracle.

Wilson reprises his role from the previous two films.

Who is new to the cast of The Matrix Resurrections?

With the fourth Matrix film, t. are some new characters altogether but also some returning characters who have been recast as new actors.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus

Morpehus was an integral figure in the original Matrix franchise – he is the hacker who freed Neo from the Matrix, presenting him with the famous offer of a red or blue pill.

Morpheus will be back for Resurrections, but, unlike in the original trilogy, he won’t be .ed by Laurence Fishburne.

Instead, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Trial of the Chicago 7) will take over.

As for why Fishburne isn’t back? He told Collider in summer 2021: ‘You’d have to ask [director] Lana Wachowski why, because I don’t have an answer for that.’

Smith is another returning character .ed by a new face.

Groff, famous for roles in Glee and Looking, replaces Hugo Weaving in the role of Thomas Anderson’s business partner and Neo’s former arch-nemesis and Agent of the Matrix.

Jessica Henwick as Bugs

A new character to the franchise, Bugs is a blue-haired gunslinger with a White Rabbit tattoo. Henwick describes her character as ‘the audience’s eyes.’

Henwick has previously starred in Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Marvel’s Luke Cage.

Neil Patrick Harris as The Analyst

A new character, the Analyst is the creator of the current iteration of the Matrix, who masquerades as Thomas’s therapist, working closely with his patient to understand the meaning behind his dreams.

Neil Patrick Harris will be familiar to audiences from his role in How I Met Your Mother.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Sati

Another recasting, Priyanka Chopra will take over the role of a character last seen in the Matrix Revolutions (Picture: Getty Images)

Sati was first introduced in the Matrix Revolutions (2003), when the character was portrayed by Tanveer K. Atwal.

Chopra Jonas is best known as one of India’s highest-paid and most popular entertainers and for starring in Hollywood movies like The White Tiger.
